Heather qualified from De Montfort University in 2004. Since then, she has worked in a wide range of settings such as Sure Starts, Family Centres, Clinics, mainstream schools, special schools, nurseries and day centres. Heather is a highly specialist therapist in working with children and adults who stammer. She has completed Michael Palin Centre training for early years, school aged children and teenage children.
Heather has been trained in the Lidcombe and Camperdown programmes. She has completed specialist training in working with adults who stammer. She has also completed training to work with people who clutter. She is an active member of the National Fluency Clinical Effectiveness Network accessing specialist training and is currently one of their study day co-ordinators running training across the UK for other SLT’s. From 2019 Heather will be running a Specialist stammering clinic on a Saturday morning within Derbyshire. Heather has worked with children aged 0-18 years who have a wide range of communication difficulties. She has a particular interest in working in early years, supporting children with language delays, speech sound disorders, language disorders, stammering and complex needs. She likes to tailor each child’s therapy, ensuring that it is supporting that child to make progress with their communication. This may be through direct therapy packages with parents or within schools/nurseries. Heather has a strong background in training schools and other professionals in a wide range of communication skills. She currently guest lectures at local universities around dyspraxia, specific language impairment and early language development. Heather’s current part-time role which she started in 2017 involves working with adults with profound and multiple learning difficulties. This role involves supporting adults with complex needs in terms of AAC and eating and drinking difficulties. She has a lot of experience in supporting families with children with social communication difficulties and Autism spectrum disorder, where she works on intensive interaction, Attention Autism, sealed pots, PECS, SCERTS and Lego therapy.
